Star Dragons are the most powerful variety of dragons in the game and arguably the strongest mounts. High Elf troops tend to be expensive, as they rely on quality over quantity. Most High Elf units have decent armour though not particularly toughgood leadershipand fairly fast movement. They have infantry, cavalry, strong missile troops, artillery, flying units, versatile spellcastersand powerful monsters. The High Elves enjoy a balanced unit roster which isn't lacking in any particular area. Though their numbers grow fewer with every passing year, the Asur will die before they let their island homeland fall. The Asur were never a numerous people, and bitter wars against the Dark Elves and Dwarfs have reduced them to a fraction of their former strength. Though still a great power with a powerful navy and wide influence, their once global empire has been reduced to just Ulthuan and a few outposts. However, the Asur are also a race in decline. The High Elves are both conceited and detached, no doubt due to their immense longevity and the comparative isolation of their island kingdom of Ulthuan, which encourage such a worldview to a great extent. I think the best strategy is to knock Caledor out within the first 15 turns but stay friends with the other HEs by using the influence mechanic. I actually abandoned my first attempt after 50 turns of pointless fighting with Saphery and Tiranoc. Gives you a bit more variation as you can reliably carve your way through anything in front of you. Late game it's swordsmen godly against infantry and phoenix guards so solid with dragons as the core. There's quite a long plateau in between so you may want to invest in leadership skills and techs to buff your basic troops to smooth things til then. You may want to stick with Tyrion's upkeep bonuses for a bit with his army all the same.

There's also an axe unit which can do a useful role temporarily. Don't bother recruiting til it's got a shield though.

Archers' AP sucks though so not so much later, although buffs from sea treasure nodes can help with that. Initially, you can pretty much melt anything before it comes into melee range with your artillery and archers. Tyrion's phoenix is good at bombing things with its ability, although it may not appear so at first glance. Spearmen backed by archers and artillery.
